The collection of birds from São Tomé and Príncipe at the Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical of the University of Lisbon (Portugal)
Последняя версия опубликована Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical Aug 1, 2016
The former Instituto de Investigação Cientifíca Tropical (Lisbon, Portugal), now integrated in the University of Lisbon, gathers important natural historical collections from different biological groups, including birds, of African Portuguese Speaking Countries. In this study, we describe the bird collection from the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, a subset of the bird collection hold in this institution, that was fully taxonomically checked and georeferenced. The full collection holds 5598 specimens, of which 547 are from São Tomé and Príncipe, representing 84 different taxa. These include 20 endemic species and 11 endemic subspecies from continental Africa bird species. The specimens were collected between 1946-1973, although 43% of the records are from 1954 and 45% are from 1970. The geographic distribution of samples represents all the country´s territory, but the number of records from São Tomé is higher than the number for Príncipe. The districts with highest number of records are Pagué (equivalent to Príncipe Island), Água Grande and Mé-Zochi. Despite the low number of specimens , the importance of the collection is considerable because it contains a high number of both avian endemisms and threatened endemic species. Furthermore, it adds valuable information to the GBIF network, especially for a country where each of the two island makes an independent Endemic Bird Area but still remains with some gaps of ornithological knowledge derived from the little relevance given to the islands during a long period of time.

Географический охват
The geographic range of the collection covers the whole territory of The Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe. The province of São Tomé has 334 records, while the province of Príncipe has 212 records. The partition between the seven districts follows the sequence: Água Grande (86), Cantagalo (31), Caué (50), Lembá (50), Lobata (40), Mé-Zóchi (74), Pagué (212). The district of collection is unknown for 4 specimens. Although the sum of the records from the districts of São Tomé have more records (345), Pagué is the district with the highest number of records because it is the only one of Príncipe.

Методы сбора
Most of the records of the collection resulted from scientific visits or expeditions carried out between 1946-1973. There were two main collectors, Fernando Frade and René de Naurois, and two main dates 1954 and 1970. In 1954, the director of the Centre of Zoology of the Junta de Investigações Ultramarinas (nowadays IICT), Fernando Frade coordinated a scientific expedition “Missão Cientifica de São Tomé e Príncipe” during three months. In 1970, a great African naturalist of the time, René de Naurois visited the islands in one of his scientific trips (1963-1973) to collect and study the São Tomé and Príncipe´s avifauna. Part of the scientific data gathered from the collected bird specimens were later published in the first book of the birds of the oceanic islands of the Gulf of Guinea (São Tomé, Príncipe and Annobón) (Naurois,1994).
| Охват исследования | The study covers both islands of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, although the number of samples is higher in São Tomé (334) than on Príncipe (212). The districts of Água Grande, Mé-Zochi (São Tomé Island) and Pagué (Príncipe) are the best represented. The time period of higher sampling effort is concentrated in the years of 1954 and 1970, corresponding to 491 out of 559 specimens present in the collection. |

| Контроль качества | For the development of the dataset the data from the labels of each specimen was revised by MM, because initially these had been transcribed as verbatim to the Specify 6 database. A taxonomic revision of the scientific names and a data checking were performed using IOC Bird List (version 5.1) followed by georeferencing according to the recommendations of Chapman & Wieczorek (2006), including the determination of uncertainty. |
Описание этапа методики:
- The collection of birds and mammals of IICT was catalogued for the first time under the project ARCA (2008-2010) using the software Specify Workbench and later imported to software Specify version 6 (Specify Software Project, 2013). The catalogued information was only transcribed but was not revised or updated. Since 2012, the collection of birds of IICT has been taxonomically revised by the first author, with updates reflected in the database. The cataloguing and georeferencing procedure followed that of Monteiro et al. (2014). The authority file used for the taxonomic revision was the IOC Bird List (v5.1) (Gill & Donker, 2014). In addition, the specimen´s information on the labels (collector, date of collecting, locality and the descriptions of beak, eye and foot) was re-checked to make sure no errors remained in the database. Since there were no geographic coordinates in labels or associated record books, the georeferencing of the locations of the capture of specimens followed the protocol of Chapman & Wieczorek (2006). The geographic gazetteers, Google Maps and Geolocat, were used to determine the coordinates based on location data and their uncertainty. The cartographic series 1:25000 of São Tomé and Príncipe (IICT, 1962, 1964) was used additionally to search for coordinates not present on the gazetteers and, when possible, to fine-tune the positions. For four records there was no sufficient information to determine the geographic coordinates. The coordinates are given in datum WGS 84, decimal degrees.
